In the 18th century, it was often local painters from Hälsingland who decorated the farmers' houses. But in the 19th century, Dalarna painters almost completely took over the walls of Hälsingland with their bright colours and lively figures among tall buildings and swaying trees.
By chance, they also invented the kurbits, their interpretation of the embossed baroque urn from which the Hälsingland painters long before them had shown lush leaves, flowers and fruits pouring out.
Later in the 19th century, the rich supply of paper allowed the painting to be rationalised. It was possible to sit at home in Rättvik painting pictures, and then roll them up to go sell them around the farms of Hälsingland. There are over one hundred identified Dalarna painters who went out looking for work in different parts of Sweden and Norway. But there were also several noted Hälsingland painters working in the region at the same time.
