The painting techniques marked the use of the room – just like the materials did for the more distinguished families.
Perhaps paint would be splashed on the walls to make the observer think of porphyry, but it was more common for expensive Italian marble to serve as the model. Simpler stencils could also be found.
Imitation oak and mahogany usually led the guest further on through the house towards the more festive rooms. There, the more elegant stencilled material – unique to Hälsingland which, with its rich variation of color and shading, was to look like French silk wallpaper – came together. And finally, large landscapes, city environments, and beautiful floral decorations were painted directly on the walls to really emphasize the ceremonial character of the room.
